Question

So - am curious about quilting with my sewing machine. What if I take 2 pieces of fabric and make the quilt sandwich with them. Do a binding around the edge. Could that be a blanket? Or, do you have to "quilt" it so that the layers are attached securely? Any help you can offer me will be greatly appreciated.

  1. You can make a smaller blanket that way like baby size, and it also just depends on the kind of fabric you are using. Like if its flannel that kind of grips to each other then its probably fine. But if you were doing something lighter weight it would go kind of floppy I think. But I have done blankets with cotton on one side and minky dot on the other and it works fine, for the baby size. If it is bigger it might get floppy too.
    Hope that helps!!

  2. The other think you can do is use the method that it's the patchwork book that I first posted about on here. She just uses a stitch that your machine already does (I don't know what it's called but it's a series of close together stitches that end up making an oval/egg shape if that makes sense). You just do that stitch every 6" or so (or whatever works for the size of your blanket). It's really simple. And if your thread matches your fabric, you can hardly tell it's there, if that's what your going for. I made several of Marian's blankets this way. I figured that without some kind of quilting, when I washed them the blankets would just go haywire. I had this same question when I was making her blankets, and this is how I resolved it and was really happy with it.

  3. They say a quilt is three layers (back, front and middle). You can secure them together by tying them with thread at points all over the quilt instead of stitching, if you prefer. Otherwise, 'stitch in the ditch' in the seams so that the stitching does not show. Easier than it sounds and effective. The thing to remember is that there are no stitching or quilting police. If you are happy then that is great!
